Substance abuse Overview

Substance abuse, also known as drug abuse and substance use disorder, is a patterned use of a drug in which the user consumes the substance in amounts or with methods which are harmful to themselves or others, and is a form of substance-related disorder.

People abuse substances such as drugs, alcohol, and tobacco for varied and complicated reasons, just like any other addiction.   Abused substances produce some form of intoxication that alters judgment, attention, physical control and perception.  They can also produce extreme anxiety and harmful consequences for the person taking them and the people close to them.

The primary substances that are abused include;

  • Alcohol
  • Drugs
  • Tobacco
